WPBS received a Silver Award of Distinction from the Communicator Awards for “Folklore and Frost: Legends of Early Downtown Watertown,” a locally-produced documentary that aired on WPBS in the Fall of 2010. The Communicator Awards is an international awards competition that recognizes outstanding work in the communication field.
The Communicator Awards is one of the leading international creative awards programs honoring creative excellence for communication professionals. The 2011 Communicator Awards received over 6000 entries from ad agencies, interactive agencies, production firms, in-house creative professionals, graphic designers, design firms, and public relations firms. The Communicator Awards are judged and overseen by the International Academy of the Visual Arts (IAVA), a 550+ member organization of leading professionals from various disciplines of the visual arts dedicated to embracing progress and the evolving nature of traditional and interactive media. Current IAVA membership represents a “Who’s Who” of acclaimed media, advertising, and marketing firms including: Condè Nast, Coach, Disney, The Ellen Degeneres Show, Estee Lauder, HBO, Keller Crescent, Monster.com, MTV, Polo Ralph Lauren, Sotheby’s Institute of Art, Tribal DDB, Victoria’s Secret, Wired, Yahoo!, and many others.
The documentary, hosted by Ron Sinclair, explores some of the eerie history of early downtown Watertown, including the Paddock Mansion, Paddock Arcade, and Public Square. Viewers learn the tragic story of the Whittleseys, who let their greed get the better of them; the site of the first village graveyard and what happened to it; and the fate of axe murderer Henry Evans, sentenced to hang at the County’s first Courthouse and Jail.
