WPBS-TV’s Summer Road Trip Programming Continues Throughout August 2024

WATERTOWN, NY (July 30, 2024) – Anytime is a great time to “get outdoors” – and summer in the Northern New York and Eastern Ontario region is especially worth celebrating. In August, WPBS is proud to present an outstanding array of programs celebrating adventure and the outdoors. Tune in to WPBS throughout the month of August to continue traveling across America with WPBS-TV’s Summer Road Trip Programming.

AUGUST 2

Finding Festivals: Saginaw Chippewa Tribe Pow Wow (7:00 pm)

The Isabella Indian Reservation is located near Mount Pleasant, Michigan in Isabella County. Discover the nature trails within the area and learn about the heritage, and traditions and regalia at the Saginaw Chippewa Tribe’s Annual Pow Wow. Haylie in deepens her understanding of Indigenous culture and joins in an intertribal dance.

AUGUST 3

Viewfinders: Pisgah National Forest (6:30 am)

Pisgah National Forest is home to tremendous beauty and abounds with waterfalls. Chris and Paul head out in search of cascading water while learning about just how important clean water is to all aspects of society.

AUGUST 4

The Great Ride (1:00 pm)

Journey more than 355 uninterrupted miles of bike trial spanning from Washington, D.C. to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Finding Festivals: Toledo Jeep Fest (7:00 pm)

Jeep has been manufactured in Toledo, Ohio since 1941. The annual Toledo Jeep Fest unites communities and celebrates the hard work of the men and women who help make Jeep. Haylie connects with a local historian about women’s role in building Jeep during World War II, gets a tour of the Stellantis Toledo Assembly Complex and goes off-roading in a Jeep for the very first time.

AUGUST 10

Islands without Cars: New York Fire Island (5:30 pm)

Fire Island is a party in the sand. Forty-five minutes from New York City, this 32-mile long, 1/4-mile wide ribbon of sand offers 17 very different and distinct communities

AUGUST 11

New York’s Seaway Lighthouses (3:30 pm)

This documentary covers the 22 plus lighthouses along New York’s Seaway Trail, from Barcelona to Ogdensburg. Learn how and why they were built and how you can visit the lighthouses today!

AUGUST 16

Finding Festivals: Frankenmuth Barvarian Festival (7:00 pm)

Michigan’s Little Bavaria, Frankenmuth Michigan, is a charming town that transports visitors to another part of the world. Though the founder’s heritage can be experienced year-round Haylie learns traditions like the raising of the maibaum and schuhplattler dancing can only be experienced during the annual Frankenmuth Bavarian Festival.

AUGUST 17

Island without Cars: California’s Santa Catalina Island (5:30 pm)

Catalina Island is all warm breezes, Hollywood-style romance, and high-sea adventure. A favorite of Hollywood celebrities, Catalina was used for location shooting in the years before jet travel.

AUGUST 18

Exploring the 1000 Islands (12:00 noon)

The fascinating history of the 1000 Islands, from the first explorers to the development of tourism and the construction of hundreds of luxury hotels eventually destroyed by fire or torn down, to the new millionaires who built gilded-age mansions and castles on many of the islands.

Journeys Through the Finger Lakes (1:00 pm)

An extraordinary exploration of the culture, landscape, and iconic history of the Finger Lakes region.

AUGUST 23

Finding Festivals: Geneva Grape Jamboree (7:00 pm)

With nearly 1,500 acres of grapes grown in the area, Geneva produces 50% of Ohio’s grapes. Since 1964 the city of Geneva has celebrated the annual harvest during the Geneva Grape Jamboree. Haylie has a grape time trying grape ice cream, grape stomping and learning the art of wine making at local vineyard Ferrante Winery & Ristorante.

Islands without Cars: Fabulous Food Tour (5:30 pm)

This special episode composite takes a closer look at the unique cuisine specific to the islands the series has previously explored, revisits some of their extraordinary people, delving a little deeper into each island’s glorious food.

Finding Festivals: Pumpkins & Pirates (7:00 pm)

From the longest running annual event in the state of Ohio, the Circleville Pumpkin Show to an island invasion during the Put In Bay Pyrate Fest this double feature is one that is full of fun. Haylie speaks to long time pumpkin growers Dr. Bob and Jo Ligget, is amazed by the art of large pumpkin carving, goes for a treasure hunt with the Captain of the island invasion and shares a Put In Bay hideaway only locals know about.
