WPBS-TV Commemorates Women’s History Month with Special Programming in March

WATERTOWN, NY (March 4, 2024) – In March, WPBS celebrates women! We honor their accomplishments and achievements, and commemorate the changes they’ve made in our world.  Throughout the month of March 2024, WPBS presents special programming that showcases how women work against deep-rooted gender discrimination and stereotypes while advocating for their stories to be told.

Join WPBS in celebrating Women’s History Month with this line up of programming:

Sunday, March 10

Composer: Amy Beach (12 noon)

A documentary about the life and music of New Hampshire born composer Amy Beach. Born in 1867, she became one of the leading composers in America and a symbol of the creative power of women.

Facing the Laughter: Minnie Pearl (1:00 pm)

Small-town girl Sarah Cannon dreamed of becoming a Shakespearean actress; instead, she became famous as the class-act comedian Minnie Pearl. This 90-minute documentary explores how this beloved character impacted American culture and how it’s still relevant today.

Without Precedent: The Supreme Life of Rosalie Abella (2:30 pm)

A 90-minute documentary exploring the life and legacy of legal icon, Rosalie Abella. The child of Holocaust survivors, Justice Abella was born in 1946 in Stuttgart, Germany, in a displaced persons camp. Her family came to Canada in 1950 as refugees. She became the first Jewish woman and first refugee to be appointed to the Supreme Court of Canada.

Tuesday, March 12

American Experience: The Sun Queen (9:00 pm)

The Sun Queen For nearly 50 years, chemical engineer and inventor Maria Telkes applied her prodigious intellect to harnessing the power of the sun. Her research and innovations from the 1930s through the ’70s continue to shape how we power our lives today.

Friday, March 22

American Masters – Marian Anderson: The Whole World in Her Hands (9:00 pm)

Discover an international singer who captivated royalty in Europe and defied the conscience of 1939 America. Watch rare archival footage and hear audio recordings exploring her life.

Sunday, March 24

Jane Addams-Together We Rise: American Stories (3:00 pm)

A documentary profiling this Nobel Peace Prize-winning activist and the cadre of persistent women who joined her to enrich the lives of thousands of immigrant women and children, inspiring others around the world to follow their lead.
