Farming Future A documentary set on a rural family farm in Vankleek Hill, Ontario, following the Mayr family’s journey from Germany to Canada in 1983 in pursuit of a better future for their dairy farm. After four decades of continuing his family’s multigenerational farming legacy, Phillip Mayr now faces the growing challenges of industrialization and the rising costs and regulations that threaten the survival of small farms. With the future of farming increasingly dominated by machines and corporate businesses, Farming Now explores how this shift impacts the Mayr family and others who deeply value traditional farming practices. Through the perspectives of three family members, the film offers an insightful look at the evolving world of agriculture and its personal toll on those who depend on it.
More Than Words A heartfelt short documentary following Qing, a Chinese artist and father, as he faces the challenges of starting a new life in Canada. Struggling with language barriers and cultural differences, Qing finds it difficult to connect with his community. However, as Halloween approaches, he channels his remarkable talent for wood sculpting to create stunning works of art that not only amaze his young daughter but also shift his neighbors’ perceptions of him. This moving story highlights how creativity can transcend barriers and foster meaningful connections in a diverse, multicultural community.
Pistol Pete The heartfelt story of Pete, a man with Down syndrome who became the equipment manager for the Toronto Maple Leafs. From a young boy with a dream to a beloved part of the team, Pete’s journey shows that with passion and perseverance, anything is possible. His story is a powerful reminder that dreams can come true, no matter the odds. Filmed in Toronto, Pistol Pete not only celebrates Pete’s triumphs but also highlights the importance of inclusivity in the sports world. Pete’s story serves as a powerful reminder that individuals with disabilities can make a lasting impact in areas where they are often overlooked.
We Live Here This powerful documentary tells the story of the tenants of two apartment buildings on Ottawa’s Bank Street, who are fighting to save their homes from being replaced by luxury rentals. In 2022, Smart Living Properties purchased the block with plans to demolish the historic, affordable apartments, forcing long-term residents—some of whom have lived there for over 40 years—into mass eviction. United as the Bank Block Tenants, they are challenging this injustice and rallying for affordable housing in Ottawa, shedding light on the broader housing crisis affecting cities across Canada. Through their activism, meetings, and personal stories, the film amplifies the voices of those displaced by redevelopment and highlights the power of community action in the fight for affordable housing.
