WATERTOWN, NY (March 25, 2022) –

WPBS-TV has long been known for presenting locally produced lifestyle and travel series, many of which have been successful and received national distribution across the PBS system, including such titles as Classical Stretch, From A Country Garden, Fishing Behind the Lines, Painting with Wilson Bickford and many more. We are very pleased to launch our latest series in this genre, World’s Greatest Cruises, which airs on WPBS on Mondays at 7:30 pm, starting Monday, March 28, 2022.

Hosted and independently produced by award-winning Canadian travel journalist and cruise expert Lynn Elmhirst, World’s Greatest Cruises celebrates the romantic traditions, fascinating ships, and transformative destinations of modern-day cruising – a style of travel that continues to grow in popularity. The series also explores new trends in cruising – river cruising on iconic waterways, expedition or polar cruising to remote corners of the world, ‘yachtsmans’ itineraries, private islands, and innovations that have transformed cruise travel.

In each half-hour episode, we sail on a unique itinerary, experiencing maritime traditions, the lifestyle and the people onboard and in memorable ports along our route such as:

* Alaska, where we catch and crack some crab and take a train along the historic Gold Rush route to the border;

* the South of France, where we discover famous wines, learn how to make olive oil and hunt truffles with a dog;

* down the Danube, where we bake the oldest cake recipe in the world, taste the waters in Budapest, and meet some very clever horses;

* in the Caribbean, where we take part in a yacht race, go behind the scenes of operating a modern cruise ship and visit the cruise line’s private island;

* along the mighty St. Lawrence Seaway, where we discover a taste of Europe in Quebec and meet a designer who’s upcycling vintage furs…and more!

Prior to the pandemic, nearly half of North Americans had taken a cruise journey –and as the pandemic winds down, interest in cruising is rebounding. This series will delight experienced cruise aficionados and armchair travelers alike, and is a wonderful complement to other travel series in the WPBS schedule including Rick Steves Europe, Samantha Brown’s Places to Love and our very own production Park It.

World’s Greatest Cruises will be distributed on PBS stations across the country starting this summer; and a second season is already in development.
