WPBS Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month With Special Programming in September

WATERTOWN, NY (September 12, 2023) – Hispanic Heritage Month runs from September 15 to October 15 and it is a great time to learn more about the diversity of Hispanic and Latina/e/o/x experiences and cultures. Join WPBS as we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with a full line up of special programming in September, including:

Sunday, September 17

Great Performances: Roots of Latin Jazz (2:30 pm)

Celebrate the rhythms of Latin music with the Raices Jazz Orchestra and performances by GRAMMY-winning artists including Richard Bona and Anaadi. Hosted by Sheila E. 


Salsa! The Dance Sensation (3:30 pm)

Dubbed by many the most popular social dance in the world, it is practiced today by people of all ages, ethnicities, and cultures. In South Florida, this Latin-flavored dance, infused with Caribbean and African roots, is performed with distinct passion and artistry. From the nightclubs to the performance halls, from senior centers to salsa schools, the dance that began as a folk tradition has exploded into the mainstream.

POV: Bulls & Saints (4:00 pm)

After 20 years of living in the United States, an undocumented family decides to return home. Little do they know it will be the most difficult journey of their lives. Set between the backdrop of the rodeo rings of North Carolina and the spellbinding Mexican hometown they long for, Bulls and Saints is a love story of reverse migration, rebellion, and redemption.

Becoming Frida Kahlo, Part 1 (9:00 pm)

In a striking new three-part series, the real Frida Kahlo is revealed – a passionate and brilliant artist living through extraordinary times. The series explores the major events of Kahlo’s life, both personal and political, from her lifelong health problems to her complicated relationship with artist Diego Rivera, whom she married not once but twice.

Hispanic Heritage Awards (9:00 pm)

The historic Hispanic Heritage Awards, created by the White House to commemorate the establishment of Hispanic Heritage Month in America will be held September 7, 2023 at the Kennedy Center. Celebrate the recipients of the 36th annual Hispanic Heritage Awards with this special.

American Masters: A Song for Cesar (10:00 pm)

Trace the life and legacy of labor activist Cesar Chavez. Through interviews with Maya Angelou, Joan Baez, Carlos Santana and more, see how music and the arts were instrumental to the success of the social movement Chavez helped found, which mobilized thousands of farmworkers across the U.S.
