Democrats will kick off the 2024 Democratic National Convention on Aug. 19 in Chicago. With a new presidential ticket, and a new surge of enthusiasm, Democrats hope to use this week to make their case for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz to voters across the country.
Why Chicago? Unlike Democratic Party conventions of the recent past, which were in swing states, this year’s event is in a true blue city in a reliably blue state. Democrats believe Illinois — with its large union workforce and success in advancing a Democratic agenda — is a good home for the Democratic platform, particularly in the Midwest. Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker may highlight this during their own DNC speaking slots.
