The Democratic-controlled House Ways and Means Committee voted Tuesday to publicly release six years of former President Donald Trumps tax returns.

As a candidate in 2016, Trump broke decades of precedent in deciding not to make his tax returns public. He spent several years fighting their release by Congress, all the way up until last month when Supreme Court allowed lawmakers to receive his tax information.

The committee released a report showing that the Internal Revenue Service failed to conduct mandatory audits of Tump’s taxes during the first two years of his presidency. The IRS began to conduct the mandatory audit of 2016 taxes on April 3, 2019 — the same day committee chair Rep. Richard Neal requested Trump’s tax returns.

Republican members of the committee criticized the move for setting a “dangerous” precedent.
