WATCH: Trump says Harris is weak on national security, says Putin endorsed her

Former President Donald Trump said Russian President Vladimir Putin endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for president because he believes she is weak.

Putin did say “we will support” Harris earlier this month because his “favorite” candidate, President Joe Biden, dropped out. The comments came days after the Biden administration announced wide-ranging sanctions related to alleged Russian interference in the upcoming U.S. presidential election.

“Putin endorsed her last week, said, ‘I hope she wins,’” Trump said. “I think he meant it because what he’s gotten away with is absolutely incredible. It wouldn’t have happened with me. The leaders of other countries think that they are weak and incompetent, and they are, they’re grossly incompetent.”

Harris and Trump met for their first and possibly only debate on Sept. 10, hosted by ABC in Philadelphia. Harris replaced President Joe Biden as the Democratic presidential nominee this summer after Biden gave a troubling debate performance in June, increasing calls for him to drop out of the race.

According to the latest PBS News/NPR/Marist poll, more than two-thirds of Americans say they will watch all or most of the debate. While many voters have already made up their minds, 14 percent of Americans say the debate will have a great impact on which candidate they choose.
