“The pressure on these athletes — it’s always there, but especially if you’re a little bit older. You know what’s at stake,” USA Today Sports Columnist Christine Brennan told the PBS NewsHour’s Amna Nawaz on Feb. 10 when discussing American Olympic skier Mikaela Shiffrin, who uncharacteristically skied out during her first two events in the 2022 Olympics. The conversation about pressure on athletes at the highest level has come up again during the Winter Olympics where a few athletes have discussed the pressure of competing on the world stage and the toll that this level of performance and anticipation takes on their mental health.
