South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott spoke Monday at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, two days after an assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump at a rally in Pennsylvania.
The suspected shooter, who was killed by law enforcement, killed one person and seriously injured two.
“I know this is going to offend the liberal elites — every time I say it, it offends them. But let me say it one more time. America is not a racist country. No, we’re not. But if you were looking for racism today, you’d find it in cities run by Democrats,” said Scott, who is Black.
“Look on the south side of Chicago, poor Black kids trapped in failing schools, thousands shot every single year, including one of my former interns. … But there’s good news. It’s conservative values that restores hope. It’s Republican policies that [lift] people up.”
During the convention, delegates will adopt a party platform and Trump will formally accept the Republican nomination for president. On Monday, Trump named Sen. J.D. Vance of Ohio as his running mate.
The Republican National Convention kicks off Monday, July 15, in Milwaukee against the backdrop of an apparent assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump this weekend. PBS News will have gavel-to-gavel special coverage each day of the convention, with a continuous stream from the main floor.
