WATCH: Sen. Ossoff’s opening statement in Jackson Supreme Court confirmation hearings

Sen. Jon Ossoff, D-Ga., gave opening remarks March 21 as the Senate Judiciary Committee kicked off Supreme Court confirmation hearings for Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson.
“In practice, the promises made in the plain text of our Constitution are still often broken for too many of our fellow Americans, and so the court remains essential to that national process of becoming in real life what America is in text,” Ossoff said.
“Today’s hearing, Judge Jackson, is evidence that this process continues, and above all, a testament to you personally, that in a nation still striving to transcend the legacies of slavery and segregation and institutionalized racism, through your brilliance and resilience and hard work you have already rendered great service to the nation as a federal judge,” he added.
Jackson was nominated by President Joe Biden in February to replace retiring Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer. If confirmed, she will be the first Black woman on the high court.
