At a hearing by the House committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack, chair Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., summarized the testimony and evidence they had presented on June 13.
“Today we heard about some of the lies Donald Trump embraced and amplified when it became clear he did not have the numbers of votes to win the election. We heard about how officials at different levels of government explored claims of fraud, yet the former president continued to repeat those false claims over and over again,” he said.
As part of his closing statement, Thompson then played an edited video of Trump supporters on Jan. 6 repeating false claims that the 2020 election was stolen as explanation for why they had come to the U.S. Capitol.
The hearing was the second of several planned by the Jan. 6 committee that focused on how Trump actively spread false information about the 2020 election outcome – what has become known as the “big lie” – in the run up to the Jan. 6 insurrection. In the year since its creation, the committee has conducted more than 1,000 interviews, seeking critical information and documents from people witness to, or involved in, the violence that day.
