WATCH: Rep. Liz Cheney’s full opening statement on Day 6 | Jan. 6 hearings

Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., vice chair of the House committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack, used her opening statement on June 28 to preface testimony from Cassidy Hutchinson, former aide to Trump White House chief of staff Mark Meadows.

Cheney described Hutchinson as a “familiar face” to the committee, since Hutchinson had been a well-known staff member for Republicans in Congress before taking roles in the White House.
“In short, Miss Hutchinson was in a position to know a great deal about the happenings in the Trump White House,” Cheney said.

The Wyoming congresswoman also noted that the public hearing would deviate from past days, which had been structured to “address specific elements of President Trump’s plan to overturn the 2020 election.” Instead, Cheney said, Hutchinson would share firsthand observations of Trump’s conduct on Jan. 6 and new information about actions and statements by various senior Trump administration officials and advisers.

The hearing was announced unexpectedly a week after the Jan. 6 committee said they were taking a break until the month of July. In the year since its creation, the committee has conducted more than 1,000 interviews, seeking critical information and documents from people witness to, or involved in, the violence that day.
