House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer called for the head of the U.S. Secret Service to resign, following what he called an “historic failure” of the agency to prevent the July 13 assassination attempt of former President Donald Trump.
“In complete defiance, director Cheatle has maintained she will not tender her resignation,” the chair said in his opening remarks.
Comer said accountability and more answers are needed after the agency failed to protect Trump and the rallygoers who joined the GOP presidential nominee for campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
Cheatle appeared before a House panel Monday to answer questions from lawmakers about the attempted assassination of Trump, months before November’s election.
