Nearly 100 long-finned pilot whales began stranding themselves on a western Australian beach Tuesday. They were first spotted swimming in a heart-shaped clump before approaching the beach in the afternoon.
At least 50 whales have died so far, but officials and volunteers hope to save as many remaining individuals as possible. Marine wildlife experts said the whales’ unusual behavior could be due to stress or illness within the pod.
