WATCH: Jackson is an ‘exceptionally qualified nominee,’ says president and CEO of civil rights group

Wade Henderson, president and CEO of the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, delivered remarks March 24 on the final day of the Senate Judiciary Committee’s Supreme Court confirmation hearings for Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson.

“By any standard, [Jackson] is an exceptionally qualified nominee,” echoing testimony delivered throughout the day.

Her confirmation will make history as the first Black woman on the high court, Henderson said, taking place 55 years after the late Justice Thurgood Marshall was confirmed as the first Black justice to serve on the bench.

“We know that a more racially diverse court includes the perspectives of communities who have been traditionally excluded from seats of power, and that judges from different demographic and legal backgrounds infuse more viewpoints into their deliberations,” Henderson said.

After three days of testimony from Jackson and questions from senators, the committee will hear from professional and personal witnesses who can speak to Jackson’s work and her character. Jackson was nominated by President Joe Biden in February to replace retiring Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer. After the hearings conclude, the committee will issue a recommendation in preparation for a full Senate vote.
