WATCH: J.D. Vance declared Republican nominee for vice president | 2024 RNC Day 1

House Speaker Mike Johnson officially declared Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance the Republican nominee for vice president Monday at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, two days after an assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump at a rally in Pennsylvania.

The suspected shooter, who was killed by law enforcement, killed one person and seriously injured two.

Earlier in the day, delegates formally nominated Trump as the Republican candidate for president. During the convention, delegates will also adopt a party platform.

The Republican National Convention kicks off Monday, July 15, in Milwaukee against the backdrop of an apparent assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump this weekend. PBS News will have gavel-to-gavel special coverage each day of the convention, with a continuous stream from the main floor.
