Satellite imagery shows the impact of the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas on a city in Gaza.
The population of Rafah, the southernmost city in Gaza, was 100,000 before Oct. 7, 2023. Now, more than half of Gaza’s 2.3 million people have filled tent cities there after trying to escape fighting elsewhere.
Israeli airstrikes killed at least 44 Palestinians in Rafah on Saturday, hours after Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered the Israeli military to develop plans to evacuate the city ahead of a ground assault.
Julia Griffin, Erica R. Hendry, Dan Cooney and Jackie Hai produced and edited this post. Satellite imagery by Planet Labs PBC.
