Retired Gen. Lloyd Austin, the former head of U.S. Central Command and President-elect Joe Biden’s pick to lead the Pentagon, testified Jan. 19 in a Senate confirmation hearing. If confirmed, Austin would be the first Black secretary of defense. Austin’s confirmation hearing was one of several held Tuesday across Capitol Hill as lawmakers took early steps to formalize Biden’s cabinet.
