Sen. Dick Durbin, Democratic chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, opened Day 3 of the Supreme Court confirmation hearings with praise for Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson.
“This is a tough assignment and many have risen to the challenge, but none as well as you did yesterday,” said Durbin of senators’ first day of questioning for President Joe Biden’s nominee for the high court.
Durbin also commended “the overwhelming majority” of both Republican and Democratic senators for their questions in the hearing, but also criticized some GOP senators for politicking ahead of the 2022 midterm elections.
“For many of the senators, yesterday was an opportunity to showcase talking points for the November election,” Durbin said.
Biden chose Jackson in February to replace retiring Justice Stephen Breyer. If confirmed, she will be the first Black woman on the high court. Wednesday is the senators’ final day to question Jackson. If confirmed, Jackson will be the first Black woman on the high court. On the final day of the hearings March 24, the Senate Judiciary Committee will hear from friends and colleagues of Jackson about her temperament and approach to the law.
