Lawyer David Schoen argued that former president Donald Trump “did not incite the horrific, terrible riots” that were carried out at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6. He claimed that House impeachment managers took Trump’s words out of context and manipulated footage, Tweets and news reporting to support their case. Schoen relied heavily on video of media interviews, rallies and the anti-racism protests from this summer to suggest that Democrats are guilty of the same behavior — including promoting violence seeking to decertify election results — that they accused Republicans of during this impeachment trial.
Schoen spoke Feb. 12 as the former president’s defense team offered their case for why the Senate should acquit Trump of inciting an insurrection for his role in the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol. Trump was impeached by the House in January, while he was still in office.
