Former President Donald Trump slammed his guilty verdict in a news conference Friday morning, saying, “this can’t be allowed to happen to other presidents.”
He said the charges against him of falsifying business records were overblown and claimed he could find similar acts committed by any head of a business.
But he also said he didn’t mind being the figurehead to fight the charges.
“This is bigger than Trump, this is bigger than me, this is bigger than my presidency,” he said.
The guilty verdict Thursday marked the first time in U.S. history that a former president was convicted in a criminal trial. The case focused on payments made by Trump’s former lawyer Michael Cohen to cover up stories about the then-candidate that could have been politically damaging during the 2016 presidential election
