In THE HARVEST: INTEGRATING MISSISSIPPI’S SCHOOLS, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Douglas A. Blackmon looks back at how school integration transformed his hometown of Leland, Mississippi.
In Leland–a town that defied the Supreme Court’s ruling in Brown v. Board of Education for 16 years–a class of first graders entered school in 1970. They were the first fully integrated class in Leland’s history.
Though the students didn’t realize it, they were reaping what decades of activists, lawmakers, and ordinary citizens had sown: equal education for all.
