WATERTOWN, NY (January 3, 2025) – The heartwarming and hilarious new season of All Creatures Great and Small, which The Telegraph (UK) notes “five seasons in, [is] still melting the hardest of hearts,” premieres Sunday, January 12, 2025 on MASTERPIECE on PBS. Return to Darrowby in Spring 1941 to find young baby Jimmy keeping everyone in Skeldale House on their toes. Helen is getting the hang of motherhood with James away at RAF Abingdon, Mrs. Hall and Siegfried are enjoying having a little one around and Carmody is now a full-fledged member of the Skeldale family. With World War II now fully underway, Siegfried is taking up the slack at the surgery, Mrs. Hall and Helen are considering their contribution within the community, and Carmody is eager to step up. Siegfried is keen to have everyone back, but Tristan’s surprise return won’t be quite as straightforward as he hoped.
Season 5 of All Creatures Great and Small is rich with new characters—of the two-legged, four-legged, and even no-legged variety! You’ll meet ARP (air raid precaution) Warden Mr. Bosworth, a self-important taskmaster played by Jeremy Swift (Ted Lasso), who MASTERPIECE viewers will likely remember as Spratt, the Dowager Countess’ butler in Downton Abbey, as well as from The Durrells in Corfu. Also joining for Season 5 is Doris (Caroline Menton), a city girl from Leeds and a land girl sent as part of the Women’s Land Army to work on Danby’s farm—a welcome new friend for Jenny Alderson. The intriguing goat-herding intellectual Miss Grantley is played by Juliet Aubrey (of Professor T. and the 1994 MASTERPIECE Middlemarch with Rufus Sewell). And MASTERPIECE Mystery! fans may even recognize Endeavour’s Winifred Thursday, Caroline O’Neil, as victory garden caretaker Dot Fawcett.
Among Season 5’s new animals is yet another four-legged arrival to Skeldale House in the form of Carmody’s dog, Hamish. Actor James Anthony-Rose said filming with Tweet, the dog playing Hamish, “…has been an absolute joy. And I’ve fallen very much in love with Tweet because I’ve never had a dog before and it’s the first time I can honestly say, ‘Oh, this is why people have dogs.’” As for the other new creatures, you’ll just have to wait and see!
