PBS News Weekly: The Israel-Hamas War | March. 1, 2024

The war between Israel and Hamas has nearly reached the five-month mark. The humanitarian crisis in Gaza is increasing as the United Nations says one-in four people are “on the brink” of famine there. It also comes as the death toll in Gaza surpasses 30,000 people– mostly women and children, according to the health ministry.

The death toll includes the more than 100 people who were killed in Gaza City this week at an aid distribution site — making it one of the deadliest single incidents of the war thus far. Eyewitnesses said Israeli tanks and troops fired on Gazans who were trying to get food aid. Israeli officials say no IDF strikes happened against the aid convoy.

Diplomacy also hangs in the balance this week as the U.S. expressed optimism about advancing cease-fire talks, but then walked them back, saying that this latest incident may complicate any progress.
