Israel this week expanded its operation in Rafah, where much of the Gazan population is seeking refuge after 8 months of war. Despite U.S. warnings, Israel launched an attack they say was targeted at Hamas fighters. The attack killed two Hamas leaders, but also incinerated a tent camp for the displaced, killing scores of civilians. Israeli says the fire was caused by a secondary explosion, possibly because of a Hamas weapons cache. The attack drew global condemnation and USAID chief Samantha Power warned Israel’s actions in Rafah are resulting in “catastrophic consequences” for Gaza’s humanitarian crisis.
