PBS News Weekly: Arizona abortion, student debt relief and other big politics news | April 12, 2024

Politics in Washington is never dull, but as Congress arrived back to Capitol Hill this week, Speaker Mike Johnson faced a particularly long list of priorities to tackle, with a razor-thin margin in the House and a potential threat of ouster. After a previous attempt failed, he secured a narrow “yes” vote to extend parts of the powerful Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, or FISA.

In Arizona, the Supreme Court this week said it would allow the enforcement of a 160-year-old near-total abortion ban. The ruling has put abortion front and center in the key battleground state, as the issue dominates the run-up to the 2024 election. Former President Donald Trump this week reaffirmed his support of the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, but he released a statement softening his stance on the most hard-line abortion restrictions. In a back and forth with reporters, he called Arizona’s upcoming state ban “too extreme.”

In this episode of PBS News Weekly, correspondent Ali Rogin walks through the biggest political headlines of the week, including President Joe Biden’s new plans to cancel student debt, and a special honor for the women who inspired ‘Rosie the Riveter.’
