Oswego West Pierhead Lighthouse, Oswego, NY
The Oswego Inner Harbor light was built in 1836, and was in service until the 1920’s.
The Outer Harbor light was constructed in 1880 and torn down in 1930.
The present lighthouse was erected in 1934, on the site of the old Outer Harbor light, at the end of the new stone West Pier.
After several Coast Guardsmen were killed in a 1942 boating accident while changing keepers, the lighthouse was automated.
The rotating 4th order Fresnel lens was removed and can now be seen at the H. Lee White Maritime Museum.
The lens was replaced with a solar-powered lantern that remains in use today.
It is now owned by the H. Lee White Maritime Museum, which conducts tours in good weather.
