Did you know that the St. Lawrence River is the world’s longest unfortified and friendliest border? Peace has existed between the United States and Canada since the signing of the Treaty of Ghent in 1815, ending the War of 1812. But it wasn’t always an easy peace.
In 1837, The British constructed Fort Henry, in Kingston, Ontario. The Fort was to guard the Kingston royal naval dockyards, as well as to protect the entrance to the Rideau Canal, which runs from Kingston to Ottawa.
Today, the fort is open as a living museum, a snapshot of life as it was like under the regimen of the Fort Henry Guard in the year 1867. Training and drills take place on the square, along with a daily garrison parade and firing of the cannon.
