The United States declared war on Great Britain in June 1812. From July 1812 to September 1814, the upper region of the St. Lawrence River played a strategic role in approximately 20 military actions occurring on both sides of the border. Numerous communities along the St. Lawrence experienced the War of 1812. Neighbors, families and friends in American and Canadian communities along the river were drawn into the war.

WPBS-DT presents a series of video vignettes entitled A Military Tale. The vignettes are based on a Marines letters. Although the letters were recreated, they are based on factual accounts of a Marine, stationed in Sackets Harbor, during the War of 1812.
In addition, WPBS presents a Teachers Guide and thematic programming for use in the Classroom or the living room. On behalf of our sponsors, enjoy these resources as you experience the History of the War of 1812 in a new, interactive way.

This program is made possible, in part, with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts – Decentralization Program, administered in Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence Counties by the St. Lawrence County Arts Council. And by grants from the Northern New York Community Foundation, the Thousand Islands Bridge Authority and Boldt Castle.
