WATERTOWN, NY; October 10, 2022 – The St. Lawrence County Youth Bureau seeks teens to become Ambassadors on its Youth Committee. The Youth Committee meets monthly, with the St. Lawrence County Youth Bureau staff, to assess youth needs, prioritize teen-led initiatives, and plan community events.
“This is a great opportunity for teens to become involved in youth-led initiatives which positively impact the lives of youth in St. Lawrence County. Teens will participate in QPR training, community service projects, team building activities, and leadership development,” commented Alexa Backus Chase, St. Lawrence County Youth Bureau Director.
The Youth Committee meets monthly, in person, at the Youth Bureau. There will be a virtual participation option making attendance convenient for teens who are not able to attend in person. This year, most meetings are offered on Sunday afternoons to avoid extracurricular and sports activity conflicts.
Johannes Richter, a junior at Potsdam high school, is coming back for his second year as a Teen Ambassador. “Being a Teen Ambassador has been such an amazing experience! It’s given me the opportunity to be more involved with the St. Lawrence County community and make awesome new friends! The Youth Committee has also helped me to become a better leader and public speaker. This is an amazing opportunity for teens to get involved,” said Richter.
Backus Chase added, “We want our county youth to have a voice, make an impact in making decisions, and gain leadership skills. Our goal is to have all county high schools represented on our Youth Committee. This allows noticeable student body representation which drives a greater impact during our student-led initiatives. We encourage educators, school administrators, and guidance counselors to refer student leaders to us.”
Students attending the following schools are encouraged to join: Canton, Clifton-Fine, Edwards-Knox, Lisbon, Madrid-Waddington, Massena, Gouverneur, Hammond, Hermon DeKalb, Heuvelton, Harrisville, Morristown, Norwood-Norfolk, Ogdensburg, Parishville-Hopkinton, and St. Lawrence Central.
The Youth Committee’s next meeting is Sunday, October 16, 2022 at 4:00 pm. Interested teens, ideally grades 8-11, can email Alexa Backus Chase at ABackus@stlawco.org or call 315.379.9464 to request more information.
