Rep. Stephanie Murphy, D-Fla., gave an opening statement on Dec. 19 as the House committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack presented its final findings to the public.
She spoke about the events leading up to Jan. 6, including a tweet by former President Donald Trump on Dec. 19, 2020 urging his supporters to travel to Washington, D.C. for a protest. Murphy said domestic violent extremists like the Oath Keepers “began organizing to come to the capital in large numbers with the specific intent to use violence to disrupt the certification of the election.”

Murphy said before Jan. 6, many law enforcement agencies gathered “substantial evidence suggesting the risk of violence at the Capitol.” Recorded testimony from former Trump advisors like Hope Hicks stated that many people around Trump asked him to call for non-violence.

Murphy said there is evidence that Trump intended “to go to the Capitol on the afternoon of Jan. 6 and that he repeatedly expressed that intention during the afternoon and in the days prior.”

The Jan. 6 committee will release its full report later this week as the panel wraps up its work.
