WPBS Celebrates Pride Month with Special Programming

WATERTOWN, NY; June 15, 2022 – June is Pride month and WPBS is marking the occasion with a varied lineup of documentaries celebrating the contributions of LGBTQ communities in Canada and the United States, which include:

June 20th at 11:30 pm – True Colors: LGBTQ+ Our Stories, Our Songs Real-life stories of hope, resilience, and triumph from people across the country, artistically represented through thematically relevant music. Exploring the personal journeys of remarkable individuals, the program connects these heartfelt stories with the history of the LGBTQ+ movement

June 21st at 11:00 pm – Outspoken: It Runs in the Family It Runs In The Family follows Jay Cabalu as he sets off on a journey from Vancouver, Canada to meet with queer cousins Monica in Oakland, California and Jazz in Manila, Philippines. All raised with a similar Roman Catholic upbringing, the Filipino cousins share their coming out stories, which range from surprising to heartwarming.

June 22nd at 11:00 pm – Outspoken: Big Pride Big Pride tells the stories of four large and in charge women – including the late actress and comic Candy Palmeter – and their daily struggles against body image stigma and stereotypes.

June 23rd at 11:00 pm – Out in Rural America This a film that explores the struggles and joys of being lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, transgender, and genderqueer in rural America. Following five stories from the LGBTQ+ community over six years, the film explores the issues of self-doubt, discrimination, acceptance, and small-town and Midwestern LGBTQ+ life from a cultural, social, familial, and religious perspective.

June 26th at 2:30 pm – Don Quixote in Newark The story of Dr. James Oleske, the pioneering pediatrician who first discovered HIV/AIDS in children and led the fight to end the childhood epidemic in America.

June 26th at 4:00 pm – The Lodge The Lodge takes audiences inside this historic first-of-its kind retirement community especially created for LGBTQ seniors and their allies.

June 26th at 4:30 pm – Two-Spirit Powwow The San Francisco nonprofit Bay Area American Indian Two-Spirits (BAAITS) has hosted an annual queer-friendly powwow since 2012, the first and largest LGBTQI-hosted one of its kind in North America. The film tracks growth from the modest one-room inaugural dance to the huge events now conducted at a massive venue.

June 26th at 5:00 pm – It’s a Match This is the story of Alana and Lori — two LGBT 20-somethings looking for love online when a casual right swipe made a match that would bind them together forever. Within a few weeks of meeting, Lori learned that Alana has been on a wait list to receive a life-saving kidney transplant and Lori learns she is a candidate for donation.
