WATCH: Why Louisville’s ‘Mother of Injustice Square Park’ says the city is not close to healing

Shameka Parrish-Wright has been a regular presence in Louisville’s protest movement in the year since Breonna Taylor was shot and killed by police in her Kentucky home. She’s earned the nickname “mother of Injustice Square Park,” which has become the center of most local activism.

“We’re not going to get the real justice and equality that we need if we continue to go on the same path,” Parrish-Wright said. Now, she’s choosing to channel her activism into politics, as she runs for mayor of Louisville and wants to work with the community to rethink the role of police. She says Louisville’s police department has to make “real, significant changes to even start the healing process,” because, one year after the protests began, the city is nowhere near healing, she said.
