WATCH: Schumer, McConnell commend Eugene Goodman, fellow officers who responded to Capitol attack

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., thanked Capitol Police officer Eugene Goodman before he was awarded a congressional gold medal for his response to the violent attack on the U.S. Capitol Jan. 6. Schumer praised Goodman for showing “calmness under pressure,” and a “willingness to make himself a target of the mob’s rage so that others might reach safety.” The majority leader also praised the numerous other officers who responded to the attack, “particularly as members of the force continue to bear scars, seen and unforeseen,” from that day. Two police officers who responded to the Capitol attack have since died by suicide. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., also praised Goodman, and said that while the Jan. 6 attack “was a day of fear for those who work here in the Capitol,” it also introduced the nation to the Capitol Police force, “to whom we owe a great debt.” Without folks like Goodman, McConnell said, “people in this chamber may not have escaped that day unharmed.”

McConnell and Schumer spoke Feb. 12 after the former president’s defense team offered their case for why the Senate should acquit Trump of inciting an insurrection for his role in the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. Trump was impeached by the House in January, while he was still in office.
