WATCH: Author Viet Thanh Nguyen says Atlanta shooter “targeted these women because they were Asian”

There have been nearly 4,000 hate incidents targeting Asian Americans in the last year. Last night’s Atlanta, Georgia shooting, in which six of the eight victims were Asian women, has the community further on edge. Amna Nawaz speaks to Author Viet Thanh Nguyen about this incident, the overall rise of incidents like these, and what you can do to help.

“I can’t help but look at this event in a much wider pattern of the Asian violence…but also a much longer history of Asian violence as well,” said Viet when reacting to last night’s shooting at a massage parlor in Atlanta, Georgia. The author went on to address the issues of hyper-sexualizing Asian women as part of the reasons for this attack. “He targeted these women because they were Asian and Asian women end up in massage parlors to which not Asian men are attracted,” Viet said. “It’s a whole environment of targeting Asian women first as sexual objects of desire and then as objects of racial fear and hatred completely interconnected.”
