Vernon Jordan, civil rights leader and Clinton adviser, dies at 85

Civil rights leader and former Clinton adviser Vernon Jordan died Tuesday at age 85. Jordan was born into a segregated public housing project in Atlanta and went on to become the only Black student in his college class. He focused his career on advancing the equality of Black Americans, helping to desegregate the University of Georgia, working on voter registration across the south, and mentoring Black youth. He led the National Urban League for 10 years and later served as close, informal adviser to president Bill Clinton. “I never saw him turn down an opportunity to try and help a young person who needed help, including to give good advice,” Clinton said of Jordan.
