WATCH: Trump impeachment amounts to ‘Constiutional cancel culture,’ says Van der Veen

Michael van der Veen said Democrats’ efforts to convict former president Donald Trump and potentially disqualify him from running for public office amounted to “constitutional cancel culture,” calling the impeachment trial “a deliberate attempt … to smear and cancel not just President Trump, but the 75 million Americans who voted for him.” Van der Veen asked the Senate to “rise above partisan lines” and reject efforts to convict Trump.

Van der Veen spoke Feb. 12 as the former president’s defense team offered their case for why the Senate should acquit Trump of inciting an insurrection for his role in the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. Trump was impeached by the House in January, while he was still in office. Roughly 74.2 million Americans voted for Trump in the election; 81.2 million voted for Joe Biden.
