Americans across the country are using this March 30th, the traditional National Doctors’ Day, to thank the men and women who selflessly put themselves in harm’s way to treat patients afflicted with coronavirus.
On October 30th, 1990, President George H. W. Bush signed a resolution designating March 30th as National Doctors’ Day. The date is associated with a milestone in American medical history. On March 30th, 1842, Dr. Crawford Long used anesthesia on a patient in order to perform a procedure on him. This is documented as the first use of general anesthesia in a medical procedure in the United States.
Many Americans have taken to Twitter to offer their thanks to these heroic strangers all over the country, from New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, late night TV host Jimmy Kimmel and Major League Soccer teams, to Dr. Andrew Morgan, currently orbiting Earth in the International Space Station, tennis legend Billie Jean King and the American Academy of Family Physicians. Krispy Kreme is offering free dozen donuts to healthcare workers every Monday from March 30th through the week of May 11th, National Nurses Week.
You can share your appreciation on social media and see how others are thanking medical staff everywhere by using the #NationalDoctorsDay.
