WATCH: ‘I’m a union guy,’ says Walz on trade and economy

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz said he’s a “union guy” in Tuesday’s vice presidential debate, responding to a moderator saying that voters trust former President Donald Trump more when it comes to the economy.

“I’m not a guy who wanted to ship things overseas,” he said, adding that “we need to have fair trading partners. That’s something that we believe in.”

While Walz said he agreed with his opponent, Ohio Sen. JD Vance, on some trade issues, the senator said former President Donald Trump “was the guy who created the largest trade deficit in American history with China.

Vance and Walz are facing each other in their first, and possibly last, vice presidential debate, hosted by CBS in New York on Oct. 1.

Both are relatively unknown to the broader American public. Walz was a U.S. House member before becoming governor of Minnesota. Vance is in his first term as a senator from Ohio.
