Israel’s assassination of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in Lebanon is reverberating across the region, raising fears of retaliation from Iran and a wider war.
Hezbollah confirmed Nasrallah’s death on Saturday, after an Israeli airstrike in a southern neighborhood of Beirut on Friday. Nasrallah was one of Hezbollah’s founders and led the group for more than three decades.
Israel’s Defense Minister Yoav Gallant called the assassination “the most important targeted strike since the founding of the state of Israel.”
In the last week alone, 100,000 residents have fled southern Lebanon amid the major escalation in fighting between Israeli and Hezbollah forces.
