WATCH: Voters react to how Trump talks about race | Crossroads: A conversation with America

Judy Woodruff and her America at a Crossroads team have traveled the United States in the run-up to the 2024 presidential election, asking Americans what divides and unites them.

The reporting has led to “Crossroads: A Conversation with America,” a town hall hosted by Woodruff. More than 50 Wisconsin residents from across the political spectrum met for a frank discussion about the challenges we face as a country.

On the issue of racial divisions, Antoine Carter said, “I am in fear of my life all the time as a Black man. And I think the issue I see is that, when people in these conversations talk about race, it’s never necessarily viewed with respect.”

Woodruff asked Carter, a Democrat, about his thoughts on former President Trump.

“I feel like as a Black man, the only thing that [Trump] tries to identify with is my struggle. Not me being a parent, not me being a person trying to work and pay bills and buy a home,” Carter said. “He is trying to lean in the fact that he assumes that Black people are felons, that he assumes that minorities operate in a deficit. And because of that, he rubs me the wrong way.”
