About The Akwesasne Nation

Akwesasne today is a vibrant community of Mohawk families who live along the mainland and islands of the St. Lawrence River downstream from the Long Sault Rapids. Akwesasne Mohawks are recognized as a progressive people yet still maintaining the language, culture and traditions of our ancestors. Following European contact and subsequent wars among the European Nations, Akwesasne became a geographically divided territory. Today, the Mohawk territory is divided into two countries, and then divided again into two provinces, plus the State of New York, resulting in Akwesasne being referred to as a multi-jurisdictional territory. The name Akwesasne in Mohawk means “Land Where the Partridge Drums”, referring to the rich wildlife in the area. Learn more at http://www.akwesasne.ca/
