WATCH: Trump says he’s ‘done so much for the Black population’

“I love the Black population of this country,” former President Donald Trump said Wednesday during an interview with the National Association of Black Journalists in Chicago “I’ve done so much for the Black population of this country, including employment, including opportunity zones with Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina, which is one of the greatest programs ever for Black workers and Black entrepreneurs.”

PolitiFact, a fact-checking resource, analyzed economic metrics during both the Trump and Biden presidencies. While they found that Black Americans fared well under Trump, they “fared even better” during Biden’s presidency, according to their analysis.

Trump also claimed that historically Black colleges and universities “were out of money” and that he “gave them long-term financing, and nobody else was doing it.” According to PolitiFact, Trump signed the FUTURE Act in 2019, which helped ensure funding to HBCUs. Yet, it’s “an exaggeration,” they write, to say no one else supported financing HBCUs. “In the House, Democrats were unanimous in their support, while two more Republicans voted against the bill than for it,” PolitiFact said.
