WATCH: Budget support needed to increase investigations into antisemitism on campuses, Cardona says

More funding will be needed to investigate allegations of antisemitism on college and university campuses, Education Secretary Miguel Cardona said during testimony before a House committee on Tuesday.

Cardona said the department launched over 100 such investigations since the Oct. 7 attack by Hamas and Israel’s subsequent invasion of Gaza.

“We have investigators looking into the cases that we have open, which is why we’re asking for an increase [in funding],” Cardona said in response to questions from Rep. Tim Walberg, R-MI about the government response to pro-Palestinian protests across college campuses.

“We have approximately 60 less investigators than we did in 2009 and triple the number of cases,” Cardona said. “We condemn antisemitism and any forms of hate on campus, and we’re moving as quickly as we can.”

Since April 18, university campuses across the country has witnessed pro-Palestinian protest encampments demanding their schools cut ties with Israel, which they say have violated the rights of Palestinians.
