Pro-Palestinian protesters chanted “shame on you” as guests arrived for the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner Saturday evening.
The annual high-profile gathering of journalists and politicians serves as a celebration of a free press and a fundraiser for journalism scholarships, and was headlined this year with roasts by President Joe Biden and comedian Colin Jost. It also comes at a time when demonstrations against the Israel-Hamas war have swept across college campuses all over the country.
Protesters criticized the Biden administration’s support of Israel during its ongoing war in Gaza and Western media’s coverage of the conflict.
At least 97 journalists and media workers, 92 of them Palestinians, have been killed since the start of the war, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists.
