PBS News Weekly: State of the Union and the 2024 election | March 1, 2024

It was a big week in politics. Voters in more than a dozen states headed to polls and caucus sites during the biggest day of the 2024 presidential primaries. Following a series of losses on Super Tuesday, Nikki Haley ended her presidential bid. In doing so, Haley cleared the path for Donald Trump to become the likely GOP nominee, and Americans are headed towards second matchup between Trump and President Joe Biden in November.

During his third State of the Union address, President Biden attacked his likely opponent, though never calling Trump by name. Biden instead described how he stands apart from his “predecessor,” on issues like foreign policy, immigration and reproductive choice.

“I will not demonize immigrants saying they ‘poison the blood of our country’ as he said in his own words. I will not separate families. I will not ban people from America because of their faith… Because unlike my predecessor, I know who we are as Americans.”
