The 50th anniversary of ‘TubaChristmas’ in New York City brought hundreds of players out to a rain-soaked Rockefeller Plaza to celebrate the holiday season– and the tuba. What started in 1974 by renowned tuba player Harvey Phillips as a tribute to his own tuba teacher, has become a global celebration, with hundreds of events from New York to Costa Rica, Hawaii to Canada, California to Washington D.C and other places in between.
The PBS NewsHour was in New York City this year to witness the “granddaddy” of all ‘TubaChristmas,'” according to coordinator Michael Salzman, and hear first hand the role the tuba plays in some of our favorite holiday tunes.
