President Biden said Monday that Gaza’s main hospital, Al Shifa, “must be protected” amid intense fighting between Israeli troops and Hamas militants on the streets surrounding the medical facility in Gaza City.
Thousands of Palestinians who had been sheltering on the hospital’s grounds have recently fled, but those who remain, including doctors and patients, report being trapped with no fuel, electricity or water as gunfire and explosions outside prevent them from leaving.
“It is my hope and expectation that there will be less intrusive action” by Israeli forces around the hospital, Biden told reporters.
